Why we love it:

  • The beauty of this collage lies in its simplicity – minimal colours and simple elements such newsprint.
  • The red hearts stand out against the white background and we love the coordinating stripy string used. You could also use the couple’s full name in the hearts, or write a special message in the hearts.
  • This idea could be applied to a gift card or framed as a picture to give as a gift.
  • This would also be a cute idea for a Valentine’s Day card.

Handmade wedding card of the week: Clothes peg bride and groom

It turns out that clothes pegs make a gorgeous bride and groom (check out Handmade gift of the week: Bride and groom clothes peg for a another variation of this idea)
Why we love it:
1. It’s the attention to the little details that make this card – the lace veil and bouquet made from little balls of scrunched up paper are adorable.
2. The ‘Mr. and Mrs.” text cut with a zig-zag edge has a lovely handmade quality – like a page from a treasured scrapbook.
3. The blue card background is a good choice. If the card was black or white, certain elements would not stand out as well. Red, pink, green, yellow, silver, or gold would be other good choices.

We reckon dad would feel pretty special if he received a lovely handmade card like this for Father’s Day, and the kids will probably have fun making a cute card like this one.

Why we love it:
  • The three-dimensional effect of this card is unique and makes it stand out.
  • The materials required are minimal and inexpensive. In fact, this is a fun way of using up single sheets of card, odd buttons and left-over stickers
  • You could play with different colours of card, and printed card would also be fun for the tie.
  • You don’t have to be an origami expert to master this project – the folding technique is pretty simple and we reckon that school-aged kids would be able to make the tie.

Card of the week: Handmade string card

I’ve often been attracted to the lovely vibrant colours of this string/twine sold in hardware stores. It’s great to see a creative way of using it that doesn’t involve staking tomatoes…

Why we love it:
  • The blocks of colour give an attractive “rainbow” effect. You could just use all one colour (blue for a guy, pink for a female), alternate colours: blue/yellow/blue/yellow or use tonal colours like red and pink.
  • We love the 3 dimensional effect of the text on the string and the string on the card base.
  • The glittery text adds another lovely texture.
  • You could apply the string to any coloured base for a different effect. The white base is fresh, but black or red would also be striking.
  • You could experiment with wool, embroidery thread, ribbon – anything you can wrap around a card to create this look.
  • This is a very versatile look – apply this idea to any sized/shape card, gift tags, occasion, etc.
  • It’s simple – you don’t need to be “crafty” to nail this projects:-)

Card of the week: Envelopes on a string

Many people shudder when they think of making a card by hand, but this cute little card is an excellent example of how easy it can be…especially since you can now buy packs of pre-made plain cards from craft shops and discount stores…
You could replace the envelopes with any shapes or letters on the string of this handmade card…

Why we love it:
These little envelopes look so cute suspended from the twine, but you could use any shape – hearts, or letters to spell a message or someone’s name
The plain kraft card really sets of the colours used on this card.
The handwritten text, “A little note” gives the card a personalised feel – especially when so many things are printed these days.

Card of the week: Washi tape card

Washi tape is everywhere at the moment. What is washi tape you ask? Washi tape is a type of Japanese decorative masking tape that has become particularly trendy in the craft world over the last couple of years. Scrapbookers love it, and so do we – especially when it’s used to make cute cards like this…
Image from www.washitapecrafts.com
Why we love it:
1. Washi tape is available in every colour and pattern that you could imagine, but we love the combination of these masculine blues and greens to make a striking men’s card.
2. This is one of the cheapest and quickest ways of making a handmade card that we have seen – especially if you can find a stamp with the greeting message you want like the above example.
3. Washi tape is now widely available in craft stores – in fact I saw some in my local $2 shop the other day, so it’s easy to source.

Card of the week: Anniversary card

Anniversaries are those occasions that creep up on us and result in us hastily grabbing a card the day before. A beautiful anniversary card is something to be treasured, not just by your partner, but by another couple (such as your parents or grandparents) celebrating an important relationship milestone.

Why we love it:
  • This is a timeless card that would suit many couples
  • The design is actually pretty simple – 9 squares with a heart. You don’t have to add the other elements, and could even change the message to read ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’, etc.
  • The white embossed card looks delicate and pure, but you could use any coloured card or paper here for a bright or tonal affect.
  • This design could also be easily applied to a square card.

Card of the week: Get well soon!

A Get Well Soon card is one of the nicest things someone can receive when they’re under the weather. Especially one like this – it’s easy to make and is sure to bring a smile to your recipient’s face!
Why we love it:
1. It’s super easy (and inexpensive) to make! All that’s required is a plaster, some goggly eyes and a felt tip pen.
2. It’s funny – they say that laughter is the best remedy and a card like this is a good start!
3. It’s generic – men, women, children – this card is suitable for all genders and ages.
4. You could play around with different coloured cards, plasters and facial expressions – the options are endless.
5. It’s personalised – I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t love a card handmade just for them.
